Tour A
Visit
to the famous Plymouth Hoe, and see where Sir Francis Drake
played bowls and the Mayflower set sail
We
will stop at The Hoe for you to visit Drake's Statue and look
out over Drake's Island. You will see the spot where Drake
played his famous game of bowls. You will then have a chance
to climb Smeaton's Tower, the 18th Century lighthouse which
originally stood on the Eddystone Rocks, in the sea to the
south west of Plymouth. Between 1882 and 1884 the lighthouse
was moved, brick by brick, to Plymouth Hoe because the rock
on which is stood was being eroded by the sea. If you do manage
to climb to the top of the lighthouse you will be able to
enjoy the views which stretch across Devon and Cornwall.

But
if you are not in an energetic mood, you can use the time
to take some photos at ground level. Ciaris, our guide, is
a professional photographer and can offer you advice on how
to get the best results from any photos you take of the wonderful
views across the Plymouth Sound.

You
will then visit The Barbican,
and will have a chance to see the Mayflower Steps, The Custom
House, and Dartington Crystal if you wish. There will be time
to visit the Elizabethan House and Garden, before we stop
for lunch.
In
the afternoon we shall spend an hour or so at the Mayflower
Centre, before leaving for the 16th century Merchant's House.
The house was owned in the early 17th century by William Parker,
who made his fortune in the Caribbean by raiding the Spanish
treasure fleet, and eventually became the Mayor of Plymouth.
To
finish, we will stop at the brand new shopping centre at Drake
Circus for a spot of retail therapy.
