Beer
Beer
is very popular with summer visitors. Here you can enjoy the
fresh local fish, either at the beach restaurants, or in the
cosy local pubs.

The
beach at Beer
Beer's
high street is very picturesque, with flower displays everywhere
you look. There are several antique shops, art galleries and
of course lots of tea shops and restaurants.
And
if you have young children or are interested in model railways,
Pecorama is just up the hill.
And, if you want to cool down a bit, then Beer Caves on the
road out of Beer may be of interest.

Branscombe
Branscombe
is set in a beautiful valley just up the coast from Sidmouth.
If you get the chance, take time to stop and visit the village
Bakery, which serves wonderful home make cakes and teas in their
beautiful cottage garden. The bakery itself has been taken over
by the National Trust, which has kept the baking room much the
same as it was during the last century. In fact, the bakery
was the last traditional bakery to be used in Devon, until its
closure in 1987.
Just
across the road from the Bakery is the Village Forge, again
owned by the National Trust. Today, the local blacksmith runs
his business from this thatched forge, concentrating mainly
on furniture, both for home and garden, as there is not enough
local demand to keep a farrier in full time employment.

From
the bakery, you can follow the path down to Manor Mill, which
has been restored by the National Trust and now grinds grain.
The mill is powered by water from a leat which runs close to
the path from the baker to the mill. Working demonstrations
are held on Sunday afternoons from April to October and also
Wednesday afternoons from mid July to early September, depending
on water level.
